The Masters Tournament

The most tightly controlled ticket in golf and the most gracious week to attend. Practice rounds, the Par 3 Contest, and four competitive days on a course that looks nothing like television suggests — the elevation change alone is worth the trip.

History

Founded in 1934 by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts on the grounds of a former plantation nursery. The green jacket arrived in 1949, and the tournament has never left Augusta National, making it the only major with a permanent home.

PGA Championship

PGA Tour · Major

The strongest field in golf, with 20 club professionals in the mix. It travels a rota of muscular American parkland courses and consistently produces the most watchable Sunday of the season.

History

First played in 1916 as a match-play event won by Jim Barnes, converted to stroke play in 1958, and moved from August to May in 2019. The Wanamaker Trophy is the heaviest prize in major golf.

U.S. Open

PGA Tour · Major

Golf's hardest examination — narrow fairways, punishing rough, and greens run to the edge. Pebble Beach in 2027 pairs the toughest test in the game with the most photographed coastline on the schedule.

History

Contested since 1895 and run by the USGA, it remains open in the truest sense: thousands enter local and final qualifying each year for a place in the field. Par is treated as a winning score by design.

The Players Championship

PGA Tour · Flagship

The Tour's own championship and the deepest field of the year, decided by the island green at the 17th. Stadium mounding makes it the best-designed spectator course in American golf.

History

Launched in 1974 and moved to the purpose-built TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course in 1982, the first course designed with galleries in mind. Pete Dye's 17th has since become the most famous short hole in the sport.

KPMG Women's PGA Championship

LPGA Tour · Major

The women's game on the same championship venues as the men — Congressional in 2027, Olympia Fields in 2028 — with a Women's Leadership Summit running alongside the competition.

History

Played since 1955 as the LPGA Championship and rebranded in 2015 under a PGA of America and KPMG partnership that moved it onto major-championship venues and doubled the purse.

U.S. Women's Open

LPGA Tour · Major

The largest purse in women's golf, staged on the USGA's premier rota. Pinehurst No. 2 in 2028 offers wide corridors and turtleback greens that make for exceptional walking spectating.

History

First played in 1946 and conducted by the USGA since 1953. Its champions map the history of the women's game, from Babe Zaharias through Annika Sörenstam to the current global era.

AIG Women's Open

LPGA Tour · Major

Links golf, coastal weather, and the most atmospheric crowds in the women's game. A natural pairing with a Scotland or Wales golf-and-castles itinerary either side of the championship week.

History

Established in 1976 and elevated to major status in 2001, it rotates the classic British links — Royal Porthcawl, Lytham, Carnoustie, and St Andrews among them.

Solheim Cup

LPGA Tour · Team

Team USA against Team Europe over three days of foursomes, fourballs, and singles. The best-value ticket in the women's game and the loudest first tee anywhere.

History

Named for Karsten Solheim and first contested in 1990 at Lake Nona. It alternates continents every two years and has produced several of the closest finishes in team golf.

The Open Championship

International · Major

The oldest major and the one every player wants. Wind, pot bunkers, and firm ground reward imagination over power — and the walk from town to the first tee is part of the experience.

History

First played in 1860 at Prestwick for a red leather challenge belt; the Claret Jug arrived in 1872. It now rotates ten links courses across Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland.

The Ryder Cup

International · Team

Twelve Americans against twelve Europeans and the most charged three days in the sport. Camiral in Spain hosts in 2028 — a Costa Brava base with Barcelona ninety minutes down the coast.

History

Contested since 1927 after seed merchant Samuel Ryder donated the trophy. The Great Britain and Ireland side became Europe in 1979, transforming the match into the rivalry it is today.

Alfred Dunhill Links Championship

International · DP World Tour

Three of the great links — the Old Course, Kingsbarns, and Carnoustie — over four days, with amateurs paired alongside tour professionals. The most accessible way to stand on the Swilcan Bridge during a tournament week.

History

Founded in 2001 as the successor to the Dunhill Cup, itself a St Andrews fixture from 1985. Its pro-am format traces directly back to the Bing Crosby tournaments that inspired it.
